The Golden Triangle
Between Vilamoura and Faro, the Golden Triangle around Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo is the championship heartland. This is where the marquee courses sit — Quinta do Lago South, the Royal at Vale do Lobo with its clifftop par-3 16th, and the revered San Lorenzo skirting the Ria Formosa. Expect immaculate condition, umbrella pines, water and a premium price.
Vilamoura: the golf-holiday hub
Vilamoura packs several courses, a marina and plenty of hotels into one resort, which makes it the easiest base for a golf holiday. The Dom Pedro stable runs from the tournament-tested Victoria, host of the Portugal Masters, to the classic tree-lined Old Course and the friendlier Pinhal and Millennium layouts — a full week without moving hotels.
The west and the value courses
Sea-view rounds around Lagos
The west trades a little prestige for views and value. Palmares sweeps down to the Bay of Lagos with links and hillside holes; Boavista and Espiche offer relaxed resort golf above the coast; and inland, the big fairways of Morgado and the dramatic Faldo course at Amendoeira give championship tests for less.
The east: quiet and top-ranked
